Securing an interview is a big step in any job search, but the real challenge often comes when you’re asked to demonstrate your skills, experience, and problem-solving abilities in a behavioural interview. Unlike traditional interviews that focus on qualifications or technical knowledge, behavioural interviews explore how you’ve acted in real-life situations, helping employers predict how you might perform in the future.
Understanding how to answer these questions effectively can give you a significant edge and telling your story well is key.
What Are Behavioural Interviews?
Behavioural interviews are based on the principle that past behaviour is the best predictor of future performance. Employers ask questions like:
-
“Tell me about a time you faced a challenging deadline.”
-
“Describe a situation where you had to resolve a conflict in a team.”
-
“Give an example of a time you took initiative to solve a problem.”
The goal isn’t just to hear what you did, but how you approached the situation, the actions you took, and the results you achieved.
The STAR Method: Structuring Your Answers
A widely used technique for behavioural interviews is the STAR method, which helps you tell a clear, structured story:
-
Situation – Set the scene. Explain the context of your example.
Example: “In my previous role as a project coordinator, we had a client request a major change just days before a deadline.” -
Task – Describe your responsibility in that situation.
Example: “I was responsible for ensuring the project stayed on schedule while incorporating the client’s changes.” -
Action – Detail the steps you took to address the challenge.
Example: “I immediately reorganised the team’s tasks, delegated responsibilities based on strengths, and coordinated daily progress check-ins.” -
Result – Share the outcome of your actions and, if possible, quantify it.
Example: “We completed the project on time, the client was impressed, and the solution led to additional follow-up work worth €50,000.”
Using STAR keeps your answers concise, results-focused, and easy for interviewers to follow.
Tips for Telling Your Story Effectively
-
Choose Relevant Examples
Select stories that highlight skills the employer values such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, adaptability, or customer service. -
Be Honest and Reflective
It’s okay to discuss challenges or mistakes, as long as you show what you learned and how you improved. -
Practice, But Don’t Memorise
Rehearse your examples so you can speak confidently, but avoid sounding scripted. Authenticity matters. -
Quantify Your Achievements
Where possible, include metrics to illustrate impact, e.g., “increased efficiency by 20%” or “managed a team of 10.” -
Stay Positive
Even if describing a difficult situation, focus on the solution and the outcome, not just the problem.
Common Behavioural Questions to Prepare For
-
Describe a time you had to meet a tight deadline.
-
Tell me about a conflict with a colleague and how you resolved it.
-
Give an example of a project you led and its results.
-
Explain a situation where you had to learn something quickly.
-
Talk about a time you made a mistake and what you did to fix it.
Having 5–6 strong examples prepared can cover most behavioural questions, as many rely on similar skills.
Behavioural interviews give you the chance to showcase not just what you’ve done, but who you are and how you work. By preparing examples, using the STAR method, and focusing on clear, results-driven stories, you can demonstrate your value effectively and stand out in any interview.
Mastering this approach takes practice, but it’s one of the most powerful tools in your career toolkit, helping you turn past experiences into a compelling narrative that proves you’re the right candidate for the role.
