Ireland’s labour market remained stable as 2024 came to a close, with the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate recorded at 4.2% in December. The latest figures released from the Central Statistics Office represents a slight increase from 4.1% in November 2024, it also highlights a positive long-term trend, as the figure is down from 4.5% in December 2023.
Unemployment by Gender
Breaking the data down by gender reveals minor fluctuations:
- The unemployment rate for males rose slightly to 4.2% in December 2024, up from 4.1% in November, but it improved year-on-year from 4.3% in December 2023.
- For females, the rate held steady at 4.2% in December 2024, unchanged from November, and significantly lower than the 4.6% recorded in December 2023.
Youth and Adult Unemployment
The youth unemployment rate (ages 15-24) saw a slight increase, climbing to 11.6% in December 2024 from a revised 11.2% in November. This highlights the ongoing need for targeted support and initiatives to engage younger job seekers and provide meaningful employment opportunities.
In contrast, the unemployment rate for individuals aged 25-74 remained steady at 3.0%, unchanged from November 2024.
