RTE.ie has reported new data from hiring platform Indeed that reveals that Ireland continues to face challenges in filling critical roles across several industries. The research, which analyzed job postings from January to December 2024, highlights a significant demand for skilled professionals in technology, engineering, and construction, with many roles remaining open for over 60 days.

Top Hard-to-Fill Roles

The report highlights privacy analysts as the hardest positions to fill, with 54% of advertised roles staying vacant for more than two months. This demand reflects the growing emphasis on data protection and privacy compliance in industries such as film, animation, and games development.

A privacy analyst is a professional who specializes in managing and protecting an organization’s sensitive data to ensure compliance with data privacy laws, regulations, and best practices.

Engineering roles also feature prominently on the list, with process engineers, senior engineers, and senior electrical engineers among the most sought-after professionals. These positions underline Ireland’s ongoing need for technical expertise to support its thriving industrial and technological sectors.

In construction, building engineers, welders, and electrical technicians remain challenging positions to fill, showcasing the industry’s reliance on skilled trades and technical specialists to meet infrastructure and development demands.

What’s Driving the Shortage?

The shortage of talent in these fields can be attributed to a combination of factors:

  • Rapid Sectoral Growth: Industries such as technology, media, and renewable energy are expanding at a faster pace than the talent pipeline can supply.
  • Specialized Skill Requirements: Roles like privacy analysts and process engineers require specific qualifications and experience, limiting the pool of eligible candidates.
  • Global Competition: Ireland’s attractiveness as a hub for multinational corporations increases competition for highly skilled professionals.

Opportunities for Job Seekers

For job seekers, these trends highlight significant opportunities for career growth and stability. Employers are increasingly willing to offer competitive packages, professional development, and flexible working conditions to attract top talent.
