The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Union (EU) have joined forces to support Morocco’s young entrepreneurs through a transformative initiative. As part of the EBRD’s Youth in Business program, a €20 million local currency loan has been extended to Al Amana Microfinance, a Moroccan microlender, to assist micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) led by entrepreneurs under the age of 35.
A major focus of this initiative is providing relief and support to regions impacted by the devastating 2023 earthquake in central Morocco. With only 14% of young Moroccans having access to a bank account, the program aims to bridge financial gaps and enhance economic opportunities for the country’s youth.
“MSMEs owned or led by young entrepreneurs represent a unique market opportunity for the Moroccan financial sector and a critical vehicle for increasing financial inclusion, yet they continue to face significant financing barriers,” stated the EBRD.
Enhancing Support for Young Businesses
To maximize the program’s impact, Al Amana Microfinance will receive specialized training to better serve eligible MSMEs. Additionally, young entrepreneurs accessing loans through this initiative will benefit from digital and non-financial skills training funded by the EBRD’s Small Business Impact Fund.
In earthquake-affected areas, the financial package includes risk coverage for loans, providing much-needed stability for young business owners. This project is further bolstered by support from the EU’s European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus (EFSD+), which mobilizes public and private resources to promote sustainable development.
Al Amana Microfinance, established in 1997, operates 647 branches across Morocco and employs over 2,400 people, delivering financial services to urban and rural communities. This partnership is expected to enhance financial inclusion and spur economic growth in Morocco.
