The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Union (EU) have joined forces to support Morocco’s young entrepreneurs through a transformative initiative. As part of the EBRD\u2019s Youth in Business<\/a> program, a \u20ac20 million local currency loan has been extended to Al Amana Microfinance, a Moroccan microlender, to assist micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) led by entrepreneurs under the age of 35.<\/p>\n A major focus of this initiative is providing relief and support to regions impacted by the devastating 2023 earthquake in central Morocco. With only 14% of young Moroccans having access to a bank account, the program aims to bridge financial gaps and enhance economic opportunities for the country\u2019s youth.<\/p>\n \u201cMSMEs owned or led by young entrepreneurs represent a unique market opportunity for the Moroccan financial sector and a critical vehicle for increasing financial inclusion, yet they continue to face significant financing barriers,\u201d stated the EBRD.<\/p>\n To maximize the program\u2019s impact, Al Amana Microfinance will receive specialized training to better serve eligible MSMEs. Additionally, young entrepreneurs accessing loans through this initiative will benefit from digital and non-financial skills training funded by the EBRD\u2019s Small Business Impact Fund.<\/p>\n In earthquake-affected areas, the financial package includes risk coverage for loans, providing much-needed stability for young business owners. This project is further bolstered by support from the EU\u2019s European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus (EFSD+), which mobilizes public and private resources to promote sustainable development.<\/p>\n Al Amana Microfinance, established in 1997, operates 647 branches across Morocco and employs over 2,400 people, delivering financial services to urban and rural communities.
