Your 12-Week Pathway to Jobs Expo Galway Success: Week 9 – Interview Preparation Pro – Research, Practice & Mindset for Success

Why am I not getting job interviews

By now, you’ve fine-tuned your CV, expanded your network, and sharpened your personal brand. Week 9 is about stepping into the spotlight… interview preparation. The ability to present yourself with clarity, confidence, and composure is what turns opportunities into job offers.

1. Research is Your Superpower

Before any interview, whether it’s on the expo floor, over video, or in a company office, do your homework.

  • Company Insights: Study the organisation’s mission, values, recent news, and sector trends.

  • Role Requirements: Understand the job description in detail and identify how your skills align with the employer’s needs.

  • Employer Culture: Check their website, social media, and employee reviews for a sense of workplace culture.

The more you know, the stronger and more relevant your answers will be.

2. Anticipate Questions & Prepare Answers

Interviews often cover a predictable set of topics. Prepare for:

  • Competency Questions (“Tell me about a time you solved a problem under pressure”)

  • Motivation Questions (“Why do you want to work here?”)

  • Strengths & Weaknesses (Be honest, but frame your answers positively)

  • Career Goals (Show ambition and alignment with the role)

Use the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers with impact.

3. Practice, Practice, Practice

  • Mock Interviews: Ask a friend, mentor, or career coach to role-play.

  • Record Yourself: Video practice can help spot nervous habits and refine body language.

  • Timing: Keep answers clear and concise—two minutes per question is a good guideline.

The goal is to sound prepared, not rehearsed.

4. Mindset & Confidence Building

Preparation is half the battle; mindset is the other half.

  • Reframe Nerves as Excitement: A little adrenaline sharpens performance.

  • Positive Visualisation: Picture yourself walking into the interview with confidence and leaving it with success.

  • Self-Talk: Replace “What if I fail?” with “I am ready. I’ve got this.”

5. Turn the Tables – Ask Smart Questions

Employers value candidates who show curiosity and initiative. Have 2–3 strong questions ready, such as:

  • “What does success look like in this role after 12 months?”

  • “How do you support professional growth within the company?”

  • “What upcoming projects or goals is the team excited about?”

Action for Week 9:
Choose one employer you’re excited about from the Jobs Expo line-up. Research them thoroughly, prepare 3 tailored answers using the STAR method, and write down 2 intelligent questions you’ll ask if given the chance.
